San Antonio Sunflower Field Photoshoot
If you are like me and love flowers and taking pictures, this guide is for you! I recommend planning a day trip here with one of your girlfriends to take some stunning photos.
I had no idea San Antonio even had a sunflower field until I stumbled across this Instagram post from SAfoodie. The field is 10 acres of beautiful sunflowers, and there is a pathway/maze to explore the area.
This post will give you all the information you need to visit the field, plus exclusive photo tips and inspiration.

When to Go
The sunflower field is only open on weekends from June 10th through July 3rd. We went the second to last weekend. However, I suggest going earlier on in the operating season. I believe this is when the flowers look best.
Furthermore, it is very hot in San Antonio this time of year, so I suggest going on a Friday evening around sunset. It will be cooler outside, plus there will be better lighting for pictures! But make sure not to get there too late so you are not rushing to get pictures before the sun sets. Getting there around 7 or 7:30 p.m. should be perfect.
What to Wear
Firstly, wear closed-toed shoes because walking through the fields can get itchy. There are also bees and soft dirt.
Secondly, wear something flowy like a dress or skirt and off-white or white for beautiful photos with the sun shining through.
Thirdly, coordinate your outfits!
Sunflower Field Photo Tips
Lighting
We had a hard time finding the right lighting at first because the sun was coming from different angles, and the position of the sunflowers altered the lighting. As a result, the photos came out either too bright or dark. That is to say, walk around and try multiple angles to test the lighting.
Now, let’s go over poses!
Poses
1). Portrait
This type of photo is popular for good reason. Getting close up with the camera captures your personality and unique features.
One portrait tip is to tilt your head to soften unflattering shadows and bring out your jawline to make your face appear slimmer.
Moreover, try out different angles where the light illuminates your features. For instance, in the photo on the left, the light is on my face, giving me a golden glow. In the photo on the right, Maryn has the light on her hair, bringing out her blonde highlights.
2). Hands in the air
Putting your hands in the air gives such a cool aesthetic. You can either be more subtle with it. For example, the photo on the left. Or you can put both hands in the air to make the picture look more fun. For example, the photo on the right.
In addition, try different angles because both the silhouette look (photo on the left) and brighter lighting (photo on the right) look great.
3). Look away
Looking to the side adds some personality to the photo. In addition, you can put your hand on your hip for some sass!
4). Twirling
I love photos that capture movement. Twirling gives the photos a filmy aesthetic. Furthermore, wearing a dress or skirt will enhance the movement effect.
