to your guide for attending New Braunfels’ Wurstfest. I have gone to Wurstfest almost every year since I was a child. This is an event you do not want to miss.

What is Wurstfest?

To get a good idea, check out the Wurstfest photo gallery here.

For those who have never heard of Wursfest, it is a German festival that happens only once a year in New Braunfels, Texas. Wurst means “sausage” in German, so Wurstfest literally translates to “sausage fest.” You may be wondering what exactly that means…

Well, the City of New Braunfels celebrates its German heritage by putting on this huge event honoring beer, music, and sausage on a stick! There, you will see men in lederhosen and women in dirndls bouncing around to German music with huge pitchers of beer.

What to Wear

As mentioned earlier, there will be men in lederhosen and women in dirndls, but there is no dress code. I personally do not wear the traditional German attire.

It is usually cold during Wurstfest, so dress accordingly. This past year, it got really cold. A couple of outfit ideas: jeans, a sweater, and a felt hat with booties; a sweater dress and a scarf with high boots.

Must Try Foods

Sprechen sie hunger?
  • Potatoe pancakes
  • Sausage on a stick, of course
  • Fried pickles
  • Fried Oreos
  • Pork schnitzel
  • Turkey leg

Drinks

Prost! 🍻

There are a few things to know beforehand about drinking at Wurstfest.

First, you cannot bring in your own alcohol. Second, drinks are bought with tickets you can purchase at a booth located straight when you walk in. Each ticket is worth $1.

DRINK PRICING:

  • Domestic Beer: $7 cup | $29 pitcher | $22 1-liter souvenir stein
  • Import Beer: $9 cup | $36 pitcher | $26 1-liter souvenir stein
  • Bottled Water: $2

And last, the drink line can get lengthy, so here are some tips to make the most of your time at Wurstfest so you are not waiting in line the majority of the time:

  1. Have a couple of people wait in line while the others enjoy the festival and rotate each time you want more drinks.
  2. Ensure you get all the drinks you can at once so you do not have to go back in line as often. I recommend buying pitchers because you can get more at once. Tip: ask for a few extra souvenir cups to share, and split the beer up (they are free!).

Conclusion and How to Get the Most out of Your Visit

I hope this post was helpful and you have a wonderful time at Wurstfest! If you’re going to remember anything from this post, remember these tips:

  • Uber, instead of paying for and trying to find parking
  • Pre-purchase admission tickets online here
  • Buy pitchers rather than individual cups of beer and share
  • Do not miss out on the music tent (this is my favorite part)
  • Look at the vendor map to see which foods you want to get and divide and conquer
Tschüss, 👋
